New safety procedures

New entry procedures for all schools beginning November 18
This is the image for the news article titled New entry procedures for all schools beginning November 18Earlier this year, Garfield Re-2 finished the first phase of the district’s facility master planning process. One of the areas of concentration was safe and secure schools. We have heard the concerns from parents, staff and students regarding school safety and we want you to know that safety is our top priority, is always top of mind and that we are continuing our efforts to ensure the health and safety of our students and staff.

One of the items prioritized in our facility master plan was improving security at our school entryways. On Monday, November 18 all of our schools and the district office will begin using the Air Phone security systems at the main entrance. An Air Phone has a video camera, a speaker and a door release system. The main entrances for all schools will be locked, and the front office staff will be able to welcome our guests and partners and take steps to protect our schools from unwanted visitors.

This will require a few changes to entry procedures to any Garfield Re-2 school or the District Office.

Any person coming to our school after the tardy bell must use the Air Phone security system for entry. The front door will be locked from the tardy bell to the end of the school day - including lunch. Visitors will be asked your name, and to explain how we can support you at our school. If you have a badge from a partner agency (e.g. Grand River Health, Garfield County, Colorado River Fire and Rescue), we would appreciate seeing that as well.

If there is more than one person waiting to come into our school, we will kindly ask that you wait until we have recognized all individuals and buzz you all in at once. We need to have clear identification on all parties prior to unlocking the door.

Once you have arrived, we will ask that you sign in to our School Gate Guardian system, and receive a visitor’s badge before experiencing our school. Please be sure to bring your driver’s license with you in the event that you have not used the School Gate Guardian system before. If you are visiting the District Office at 839 Whiteriver Ave. in Rifle, please use the East Avenue entrance. The process will be the same as outlined above.

If you are running late and need to drop off your elementary child, we ask that you please accompany your child to the front office and sign them in for the day so we know that he/she has arrived safely.

Our commitment is to create welcoming and safe schools and we know that this protocol is more stringent than past practice and may inconvenience our visitors who are, as always, welcome in our schools. If you have questions about how this process will work, please contact your school principal.

The purchase and installation of the Air Phones was made possible through a Colorado Department of Homeland Security grant.
